Smart materials technologies regenerative medicine ETPN webinar RegMed Nov 21

Speakers & topics

Cristina Barrias

  • Position: Principal Investigator and Group Leader at i3S- Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, University of Porto
  • Title: “Microtissue engineering: building tissues from the bottom-up”
  • Bio: Cristina Barrias is Principal Investigator at i3S/INEB and invited Associate Professor at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (University of Porto). Her group at i3S (www.i3s.up.pt) focuses on the design of customised hydrogel 3D matrices, with individually tuneable biochemical/mechanical properties, to direct cellular self-assembly into vascularized (micro)tissues akin to native tissues. The aim is to recapitulate complex tissue morphogenesis processes, understand the dynamics of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, and decipher key biochemical/mechanical regulators of cell response. This knowledge is being translated into the design of advanced 3D in vitro models and improved tissue regeneration therapies. Currently Cristina Barrias is also member of the Board of Directors of INEB and of the Council of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB).

Salvatore Girardo

  • Title: “Chips & Beads: Analyzing, Treating and Mimicking cells for Mechanobiology”
  • Position: Head of Lab-on-a-chip Systems Technology Platform at Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light
  • Bio: Salvatore Girardo investigates microfabrication technologies primarily in the area of microfluidics applied to biology and biophysics. He is a Physicist and author on 60 scientific publications and inventor on 3 patents. In 2008 he got a PhD in Nanoscience at the University of Salento (Italy), working on the development of new strategies for the liquid flow control at microscales. In 2013 he joined the Biotechnology Center (TU Dresden, Germany) to setup and manage a new facility, where he implemented novel organ-on-chip platforms, and microfluidic-based methods for cell-mimicking, analysis and treatment. Since 2019 he is the head of the Lab-on-a-chip Systems Technology Platform at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen (Germany), working on the development of smart materials and microfluidic technologies mainly applied in the area of mechanobiology.

Meriem Lamghari

  • “General Introduction about the ETPN WG on Regenerative Medicine”
  • Position: WG leader of the WG on RegMed at the ETPN / Group leader at i3S/INEB and Professor at Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of University of Porto
  • Bio: Meriem Lamghari is group Leader  at INEB/i3S and Professor at Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of University of Porto. She has graduated in Cell Biology at Université Jussieu Paris 7- France and received her Ph.D. in Osteoarticular Biology, Biomechanics and Biomaterials from the same University in 1999. Her research interests focus on skeletal tissues repair and regeneration. Her scientific path started with the study of biomaterials for vertebral bone regeneration and progressed through her postdoc at INEB (2000-2004, Portugal) where she was actively involved in project aiming to develop bioactive biomaterials for local drug delivery for bone repair in a rare disease (Gaucher’s disease). In 2005, she became senior researcher at INEB. In the framework of INEB’s Research Program Aging, Tissue repair and Tissue Regeneration, she actively participated in projects aiming to develop bioactive biomaterials to modulate inflammatory response and promote bone regeneration. In 2009, she established her own research team. In the framework of her research, she developed 3D models in microfluidic devices for skeletal-non skeletal cells communication studies. To this date, she was successful in obtaining funding for 20 externally funded projects, 6 of which as coordinator. Currently, she is the coordinator of the H2020 RESTORE project (ref 814558) “User- centred smart 3D nanobiomaterial-based scaffold for chondral repair” started on 1st January 2019. She is also partner in the H2020 FLAMIN-GO project” From pathobioLogy to synoviA on chip: driving rheuMatoId arthritis to the precisioN medicine GOal”, in the MSCA-ITN EU/H2020 “BonePainII: A European Training Network to combat bone pain (ref 814244)”and in the MSCA-ITN EU/H2020 “Precision medicine for muscoloskeletal regeneration, prosthetics and active ageing” (Proposal number 860462). She is an active member of European networks and established national and international collaborations that resulted in several papers and awards. She is also involved in Doctoral and Post-doctoral supervision, educational activities and  animal ethics.

We look forward  to welcoming you at this ETPN webinar on Regenerative medicine!
