Title:
The future of Very Large-Scale Integration of Integrated Circuits (VLSI-ICs)
Abstract:
Very-large-scale integration of Integrated circuits (VLSI ICs) is the key technology for the modern information society. Its figures of merit usually follow Moore’s law, stating an exponential improvement vs. time. However, exponential improvement cannot last forever for practical reasons and there is always a need for a breakthrough or alternatives. In this class, we will discuss the reasons for the success of the VLSI ICs technology, its limitations, and its potential progress. First, we present an overview of the field including a historical review and status report. Next, we will review the key current technologies, i.e. materials, devices, circuits, and systems, etc. We will briefly review the relevant physical, technological, and economical limits. Finally, we will present a few future technologies, some of which are taken from other novel fields such as Nano-Bio-Technologies or artificial intelligence, solving bottlenecks limiting future progress, discuss their potential impact and present few alternatives to existing computational and communication systems.
