Dear ETPN members, dear colleagues from the European community of Nanomedicine, we are happy to share with you an opportunity to submit your article to the special issue on Nanomedicine for brain delivery on Frontiers.org. This initiative is coordinated by Prof. Giovanni Tosi from Unimore РUniversità degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, vice chairman of the ETPN Working group on Nanotherapeutics & targeted delivery. We warmly encourage all of you to get involved!

About Innovation in Nano-medicine: Brain Delivery

Brain delivery of drugs is strongly hampered by ability of crossing the blood-brain barrier and/or inefficient brain exposure to potentially active molecules. Novel strategies have been investigated over the last 10 years, but there still remains an alarming absence of effective approaches. A deeper analysis of these strategies should be done, from analyzing basic neuroscience, to applied neuropathology, and finally converge to an evaluation of state-of-the-art approaches, namely loco-regional and systemic strategies to overcome the blood-brain barrier.

The scope of this Research Topic is to provide a comprehensive overview of different aspects of brain delivery, with focus on neurobiology, neurodegenerative disorders, brain tumors and innovative nanomedicine-mediated approaches. Original Research as well as Review Articles of the last 10 years in the different fields are welcome. Preliminary research could also be accepted.

The aim of this special issue is dedicated to brain diseases and innovative technologies for new therapeutic chances. The following sub-themes are encouraged to submit:

  • Basic neuroscience evidences of the blood-brain barrier and brain diseases with highlight on in-vivo and in-vitro models available;
  • Brain diseases with special focus on neurodegenerative disorders (such as Huntington’s Disease), the limits and challenges of current and future therapies;
  • Overview of brain delivery approaches;
  • Overview of loco-regional brain delivery and focus on Glioblastoma approaches;
  • Overview on targeted nano-medicines for brain delivery by systemic administration.

Keywords: Nanomedicines, brain, blood-brain barrier, central nervous system
