Overview

The European Union is actively building an ecosystem to support the development and commercialization of RNA therapeutics. Through various initiatives, funding opportunities, public-private collaborations, infrastructure support, and expert networks, the EU aims to strengthen biotechnology and biomanufacturing.

Health biotechnology and biopharmaceutical research and innovation (R&I) have been substantially supported by EU R&I Framework Programmes, with over 1,250 Horizon 2020 and nearly 600 Horizon Europe projects already funded. In March 2024, the European Commission reaffirmed the strategic importance of biotechnology for the EU’s competitiveness and autonomy, announcing targeted actions to boost this sector across Europe.

Workshop Objectives:
This two-hour interactive workshop, organized by the Horizon 2020 project “EXPERT,” aims to:

  • Provide a roadmap and raise awareness of EU resources supporting RNA therapeutics’ development and commercialization.
  • Identify challenges in utilizing existing infrastructure and services effectively, gathering user feedback and providing recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Showcase key insights and outputs from EU-funded collaborative R&I projects.
  • Explore the approaches, challenges, and issues related to capitalizing on mRNA R&I project outcomes from various perspectives.
  • Facilitate collaboration with ongoing projects and foster synergies with European, national, and regional initiatives, funding programmes, and platforms.

Speakers:

  • Raymond Schiffelers – Professor of Nanomedicine, UMC Utrecht
  • Florence Lambolez – Director Pharmacology, etherna
  • Sanja Šale – Health Innovation Lead, EURICE GmbH
  • Iraida Loinaz – Deputy Director, CIDETEC Nanomedicine

About EXPERT

The EXPERT project addresses the urgent need for innovative treatments for cancer and heart failure, two of Europe’s leading causes of death. Leveraging the proven potential of mRNA technology, EXPERT aims to develop an off-the-shelf delivery system for mRNA-based nanomedicines, ready for clinical testing. This modular platform streamlines production, purification, formulation, and storage, accelerating drug availability and enabling future applications for other diseases. Coordinated by the University Medical Centre Utrecht, EXPERT unites top-tier partners under EU Horizon 2020 funding to revolutionize mRNA therapeutics. The EXPERT project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 825828.
