Nanotechnology for better diagnosis and care

A new funding opportunity to develop and validate diagnostic and theranostic tools for non-communicable diseases.

ERA4Health has pre-announced NanoDiagNCD, its 10th Joint Transnational Call. It will support translational research with nanotechnology at its core, used alone or combined with other Key Enabling Technologies, to improve disease detection and clinical management.

Research scope

Better tools across the continuum of care

Projects should develop and/or validate diagnostic and theranostic tools grounded in robust scientific evidence. Their results must help optimise the continuum of care, from prevention and early detection to monitoring, treatment guidance and the assessment of adverse effects or risk–benefit balance.

01

Demonstrate added value

Define and validate performance benchmarks against existing diagnostic approaches. Relevant dimensions include sensitivity, specificity, accessibility, affordability, patient comfort, invasiveness and/or safety.

02

Plan for translation

Consider scalability, manufacturability, standardisation, affordability, accessibility, cost-effectiveness, regulatory readiness, interoperability and integration across healthcare systems throughout the research.

03

Keep nanotechnology central

Nanotechnology must be central to the proposed approach. It can be used alone or in combination with other Key Enabling Technologies.

04

Diagnostic-first theranostics

For theranostic tools, the diagnostic component must serve therapeutic choice.

Check the scope before you start.

Discovery of new biomarkers is excluded; technological improvements and new applications using known biomarkers are permitted. Infectious diseases are excluded, but chronic conditions resulting from past infections may be addressed.

Consortium building

Who can take part?

The pre-announcement foresees 36-month projects involving three to five eligible partners from at least three participating countries. At least two eligible partners must be based in different participating EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries.

Each application must include partners seeking funding from at least two of the following three categories:

Academia
Clinical / public health sector
Enterprises

Operational stakeholders should be involved in line with the project’s aims. Consortium limits may increase to six or seven eligible partners when one or two eligible partners, respectively, are included from Lithuania, Slovakia or Taiwan. No more than two eligible partners may come from the same country; up to two self-funded collaborators are permitted.

National and regional funding rules apply. Check the latest list of participating funding organisations and the applicable national or regional eligibility requirements on the official ERA4Health call page before finalising your consortium. Participation and funding conditions remain subject to the final call documents.

Next stage: invited applicants will have until 9 June 2027, 12:00 CEST to submit their full proposal.

A shared focus on translation

ETPN helped shape the call through ERA4Health’s expert consultations, drawing on input from our community and our translational experience through the HealthTech TAB. Our contribution focused on four priorities: improving the continuum of care; benchmarking new tools against existing diagnostic approaches to demonstrate added value; addressing scalability, manufacturability, regulatory readiness and adoption from the outset; and applying a diagnostic-first principle to theranostics. We welcome the clear place given to these priorities in the resulting call, developed through a collective process led by ERA4Health.

Coming soon / Stay tuned

Find your partners for NanoDiagNCD

ETPN will organise the official NanoDiagNCD matchmaking to help prospective applicants connect complementary scientific, clinical and industrial expertise and build transnational consortia.

The date, format and registration details will be announced shortly. Stay tuned to ETPN for the next update.

Help build strong NanoDiagNCD proposals

We call on ETPN members and the wider nanomedicine community to take an active part in NanoDiagNCD. Explore the scope, discuss your project ideas, connect with complementary partners and share the call across your networks. Join the forthcoming matchmaking to help build ambitious, clinically relevant proposals with a clear path towards patient benefit.
